Construction required rigorous planning and control to ensure adjacent departments remained fully operational throughout the works. The project was carefully staged, with demolition and construction sequenced to maintain uninterrupted access to critical services, including sterile and equipment stores.
A key focus of the build was stringent infection and dust control. Physical barriers, sealed work zones and controlled access points were implemented to isolate construction activities from clinical environments. Air quality management measures were incorporated, including negative air capabilities within new patient areas and strict containment protocols during demolition, to minimise the risk of contamination in a sensitive healthcare setting.
Construction works involved the removal and reconfiguration of approximately 450m² of existing facilities, alongside the delivery of 12 new fully enclosed points of care with integrated ensuites. These were built to meet demanding clinical requirements while ensuring that surrounding hospital functions could continue safely and efficiently.
Through disciplined staging, robust site management and a strong focus on environmental controls, the project successfully delivered complex construction within an operational hospital—maintaining safety, protecting patients and staff, and ensuring continuity of care at all times.
