Epworth Eastern ICU expansion

Fitout of multiple clinical floors within the Epworth Eastern Hospital redevelopment, delivering new expanded critical care capacity within a live operational hospital environment.

A key component was the staged expansion of the existing Intensive Care Unit (ICU), increasing capacity with new critical care beds, including negative pressure isolation capability, upgraded staff bases, as well as the fit out of two new pathologies. The ICU remained fully functional throughout construction, with strict staging implemented to maintain a minimum number of operational beds and uninterrupted clinical services.

Delivery within this sensitive healthcare environment required detailed planning and execution of staging, temporary works, and infection control measures. Works were carefully sequenced and isolated to minimise disruption to patients, staff, and adjacent departments, with clear separation between construction and clinical zones at all stages.

Comprehensive hoarding systems were installed to segregate the works, incorporating sealed partitions, controlled access points, and negative air pressure where required for dust and infection control. Infection control protocols were rigorously applied, including dust suppression, filtered air management, regular cleaning regimes and strict site access procedures in accordance with hospital requirements.

All construction activities were undertaken in close coordination with hospital operations, including service shutdown management, logistics planning via shared loading zones, and compliance with stringent safety and clinical standards. The result is a high-quality, fully operational healthcare fitout delivered within a complex live environment while maintaining patient safety and continuity of care.
