The works included targeted demolition, extension of the existing ambulance entry, and construction of new interview, observation, and support spaces, along with associated external works. Delivered within an operational emergency department, the project required meticulous staging, coordination, and phasing to ensure uninterrupted emergency services and continuous patient access.
A key focus of the design and construction was safety, with the integration of anti-ligature fixtures, robust materials, and secure fittings throughout. All elements were carefully selected and detailed to withstand intensive clinical use while maintaining a safe and controlled environment for both patients and staff.
The project also incorporated comprehensive upgrades to building services, including hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and fire systems, seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure. All systems were fully commissioned and tested to meet stringent healthcare and Australian compliance standards.
Construction was undertaken under strict infection control protocols, with extensive measures implemented to manage dust, noise, and vibration. Temporary hoardings, controlled access routes, and negative pressure environments were used to protect adjacent clinical areas and minimise disruption to hospital operations.
High-quality finishes, durable joinery, and specialist waterproofing systems were installed to meet the rigorous hygiene and performance requirements of a healthcare setting. Sustainability principles were also embedded in the project, including waste minimisation and responsible material selection.
The completed facility delivers a secure, resilient, and highly functional assessment space, enhancing the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised behavioural health care within a safe and controlled clinical environment.
