Box Hill High School Wellness Centre

Adaptive reuse and refurbishment of an existing gymnasium space to create a purpose-built wellbeing environment for students and staff.

The works included the transformation of a large, open internal area into a series of dedicated spaces, including counselling rooms, meeting areas, and a central antechamber. This was achieved through the construction of new partition walls, ceilings, and integrated building elements, carefully configured to support privacy, comfort, and functional use.

A key component of the project was the sensitive integration of new works within the existing structure. Existing building elements—including timber floors and structural components—were retained and protected, while new finishes and materials were introduced to create a cohesive and contemporary environment.

The fitout incorporated high-quality joinery, including a new kitchenette and custom seating, along with upgraded finishes such as carpet tiles, feature wall treatments, and acoustic elements to enhance comfort and usability. Lighting and glazing were also updated to improve the overall ambience and functionality of the space.

Comprehensive upgrades to services were undertaken, including electrical, mechanical, and communications systems. New data and power outlets, lighting installations, and acoustic ventilation solutions were integrated to meet the operational requirements of the new facility.

Delivered within an operational school environment, the project required careful planning and staging to ensure the safety of students and staff. Strict controls were implemented around access, site protection, and construction activities to minimise disruption to daily school operations.

The completed wellness area provides a calm, supportive, and functional environment, offering dedicated spaces for counselling and student support while enhancing the overall wellbeing infrastructure of the school.
