The Bays Hospital Day Oncology

Staged refurbishment and fitout of a Day Oncology facility within an operational hospital environment, requiring highly controlled construction sequencing and strict infection and dust management protocols to maintain uninterrupted clinical services.

Works commenced with detailed planning and coordination, including the development of staged construction and demolition methodologies aligned with hospital operations. All activities were programmed to minimise disruption, with particular attention given to noisy, dusty, or service-impacting works, which were scheduled in consultation with hospital stakeholders and undertaken at controlled times.

Demolition was carried out progressively and in isolated work zones, with full containment measures implemented to prevent the spread of dust, debris, and contaminants into adjacent occupied areas. Sealed hoardings, barriers, and controlled access points were installed, ensuring safe separation between construction works and patients, staff, and visitors. Dust suppression techniques and enclosed waste removal processes were maintained throughout demolition and construction activities.

The construction phase included new partitions, ceilings, doors, glazing, and integrated building services, delivered in carefully sequenced stages to allow neighbouring hospital functions to remain operational. All works were coordinated across multiple trades, with strict control of penetrations, fire-stopping, and sealing to maintain infection control, air pressure regimes, and fire integrity within the facility.

Particular emphasis was placed on working within an occupied premises, requiring the contractor to minimise noise, vibration, and dust, while maintaining continuous access and safe circulation for hospital users. A dedicated program of disruptive works was maintained and regularly updated, ensuring transparency and coordination with hospital operations at all times.

Environmental controls were rigorously enforced, including containment of all debris and prevention of dust and contaminants leaving the work area. Construction zones were continuously cleaned, and completed works were protected to maintain hospital-grade hygiene standards throughout the build.

The project was delivered through disciplined staging, robust infection control measures, and close collaboration with hospital stakeholders, resulting in a fully operational, high-quality oncology facility seamlessly integrated within the existing hospital environment.
